Focused Gaussian Beams for Seismic Imaging

The application of focused Gaussian beams is investigated for the seismic imaging of common-shot reflection data. The focusing of Gaussian beams away from the source and receiver surface adds flexibility to beam imaging algorithms allowing for the narrowest portions of the beams to occur at the depth of a specific target structure. This minimizes the number of beams required to form an image at...

Excitation of Multipole Plasmons by Optical Vortex Beams

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) has been shown to exhibit a strong potential for nanoscale electromagnetic field manipulation beyond the diffraction limit. Particularly dark mode plasmons circumvent radiation loss and store the energy long in time, which raise the prospect of interesting plasmonics applications, for example biochemical sensing and nanoscale lasing. Here we theoretica...

Single particle scattering with focused laser beams.

A scattering technique is described in which the incident laser beam is tightly focused to isolate the effects of a single particle. In this way the individual particles may be studied in their natural environment, and experiments with latex spheres are in agreement with the theory.

Rayleigh-Debye scattering with focused laser beams.

A focused beam technique has been developed for diagnosing the characteristics of individual particles within a polydisperse ensemble. In the Rayleigh-Debye approximation the scattered fields are related to the orientation and properties of a scatterer by means of explicit analytic formulas. The results simplify when the particle size is small compared to the minimum beam diameter.

Dynamically Focused Gaussian Beams for Seismic Imaging

An initial study is performed in which dynamically focused Gaussian beams are investigated for seismic imaging. Focused Gaussian beams away from the source and receiver plane allow the narrowest and planar portions of the beams to occur at the depth of a specific target structure. To match the seismic data, quadratic phase corrections are required for the local slant stacks of the surface data....
